Roulette is a casino game that involves spinning a ball around a wheel and betting on which number it will land. There are a number of different types of bets available, including inside and outside bets. Players can also make a bet on the color red or black, or whether the number is odd or even. In addition, there are a number of specialty bets, such as high/low, red/black, and first, second, or third dozen.

The game’s history dates back more than 300 years, with a French physicist named Blaise Pascal being credited for inventing it. Pascal was working on a perpetual motion machine at the time, but his invention ended up being something quite different.

When a player arrives at the table they tell the croupier what amount their chips will be worth, and she indicates this on her “wheel” of chips. These are then parceled out to the players when the game is between decisions. The croupier will then place the chip with the last decision on its appropriate spot, and the betting begins.

As with any gambling game, there are many different strategies that players use to maximize their winnings. These can include a number of basic techniques, such as doubling bets after losses and increasing the amount of each bet after each win. However, the most important factor in a successful roulette strategy is choosing a realistic budget and sticking to it.

Most online casinos offer several different types of roulette games, including live dealers and virtual tables. The latter are often more convenient, as they can be played through a web browser or mobile phone. They can also be played on the go, making them ideal for people with busy schedules and limited spare time.

Unlike American roulette, which features double-zero pockets, European roulette is played with a single zero, reducing the house edge to 1.35%. This is why it is considered more fair to players than its counterpart. There are some other differences, such as the La Partage rule, which refunds half of losing bets.

The most common type of bet in roulette is an outside bet, which covers a large area on the betting board and pays out 2-1 odds. The most popular type of outside bet is the Dozens bet, which places bets on either the first, second, or third set of 12 numbers on the roulette wheel. Other outside bets include Straight-Up, Split, and Corner.

A Straight-Up bet is a bet that the ball will land on a specific number on the roulette wheel. It costs 17 chips to complete and pays out 392 chips if it wins. Alternatively, a Split bet selects two numbers and pays out based on the odds of those two numbers hitting. Finally, a Corner bet places your chips on the line connecting four numbers on the roulette wheel.

In addition to these bets, a player can also place a bet on a color (red or black), an odd/even number, or whether the number is between 1 and 36. Each of these bets has a specific payout depending on the odds of hitting that number.
