The Basics of Baccarat

Baccarat is one of the world’s oldest and most popular casino games. It is a relative simple game to learn, but has an interesting history and many rules that vary by casino. It is played between two opposing hands, either the player’s hand or the banker’s hand. The aim is to bet on whose hand total will be closest to nine. Each hand is dealt two cards and the values of these are added together. Aces are worth 1; 2 through 9 are valued at their face value; and tens, jacks, queens and kings are worth zero. The hand with the higher total wins. In addition to betting on the winner of each hand, players may also place bets on a tie or on a pair.

Baccarat was invented in Italy around 1500, and quickly gained popularity in France where it became the favorite game of King Charles VIII and his court. The royal craze helped spread the game across Europe and to Asia. Today the game is played in casinos worldwide. The game is easy to learn and has a very low house edge compared to other table games. Baccarat is also a very fast-paced game, and it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement.

There are three main baccarat variants: punto banco, baccarat chemin de fer and baccarat banque (or a deux tableaux). Each has different rules and payouts, but the basic principles are the same. Knowing the odds, payouts and probabilities of each bet will help you make better decisions when playing.

The position of the banker is determined via auctioning and given to the player willing to risk the most. Once play begins, the banker sits opposite the croupier with the discard area between them. Other players are seated on either side of the banker and are called punters. The banker may retire from the role at any time, but must declare the amount they are willing to risk before retiring. The banker may be replaced by any player in order of rotation, starting with the same stake and dealing from undealt cards.

If a bet is placed on the banker’s hand, a commission must be paid to the casino. This varies from casino to casino, but is typically around 5-10% of winning bets. This commission is based on the probability of the banker’s hand winning, and must be paid before the next round begins.

Choosing the right bet can have a big impact on your bankroll. The simplest bet is on the player win, which pays out even money if the hand total is 9. If you are unsure of what to bet on, try placing a bet on the tie. This bet pays out 8 to 1 and offers a much smaller house edge than the other bets.
