Improve Your Chances of Winning at Roulette

Roulette is a game of chance, but there are ways to improve your chances of winning. The most important thing is to understand the rules and odds. Once you know that, it’s a matter of playing the game intelligently and choosing bet types which will offer the best possible chance of success.

Betting in roulette, like all casino games, is done with chips which have different colours to represent their value. You convert cash to chips when you join a table and then you use the chips to place your bets. The table will usually have six to eight sets of chips, with each set consisting of 300 chips. You can also bet by placing a cheque, which has the same value as a chip.

The roulette wheel consists of a solid wooden disk, slightly convex in shape. A series of metal partitions, called frets or compartments by croupiers, are positioned around the rim, and each of these is painted alternately red and black. A thirty-six-number section of the wheel, numbered non-consecutively from 1 to 36, separates the red and black sections. On European-style wheels, a 37th compartment, painted green, carries the number 0. A number can be bet on either alone, or within one of the three groups of numbers: (i) the first dozen (1-12, Premiere douzaine or P12), (ii) the second dozen (12-24, Moyenne douzaine or M12) or (iii) the third dozen (16-36, Derniere douzaine or D12).

As soon as the wheel stops spinning and the ball tracks are clear, players may continue to bet until the dealer says, “no more bets.” It’s important to remember that you can bet only on the numbers on the table, not on any other areas of the layout. As a result, it’s vital to read the rules and practice in demo mode before playing for real money.
