As a writer, I often use the domino image to remind myself of key plot beats that need to be included in a novel. For example, if I’ve written a scene where my protagonist uncovers an important clue to her case, but the next scene doesn’t have enough logical impact on the scene before it, then that scene is like a blank domino without any impact on the rest of the narrative. To avoid this, I try to keep a balance of high-action scenes with softer moments of reflection or sequel (what some people call backstory). This allows readers to connect emotionally with the story and understand the character’s motivation.
