The Domino Effect

Domino is a name that can mean many things: a game, an organization, or even a person. But it is also a symbol of the power of an idea that can grow and change the world around it. This is why we chose it as our feature for this issue of The Domino Effect.

In the game of domino, a player takes turns placing one tile edge to edge against another, with either identical or different values (known as ends). The value of each end is represented by its color: a white piece has a single black spot, while a red piece has two white spots. The most common variant, called double-six, has 28 tiles in total. More advanced sets may have more than 28 tiles, with the difference between each end represented by an additional number of pips; the most common extended sets include double-nine, double-12, and double-15. The last of these increases the maximum number of pips on an end by three, and is therefore not as compatible with existing dominoes.

To make a domino set work, the first domino must be placed in exactly the right position for it to fall. In the same way, stories must be carefully constructed if they are to succeed. They need to advance the hero’s journey – but they must also be well-paced if they are not to feel overlong or, on the other hand, too short at moments of great discovery or at plot points.

Like a domino, the best ideas build on each other and can create something much bigger than its component parts. This is why it’s so important for organizations to foster a culture of innovation and allow employees the freedom to explore new ideas. In this way, Domino’s has been able to innovate in ways that have made its business better.

Domino, a character in the X-Men universe, is a mutant with the ability to influence the laws of probability and shift odds in her favor. She is a weapons expert, capable of firing projectiles from her staff and a superb athlete, martial artist, and linguist. Her abilities have allowed her to foil plans by John Sublime’s Third Species group to harvest mutant organs. She has also served at X-Corporation’s Hong Kong branch and battled alongside the time-traveling mutant Cable.

Domino’s powers are unconsciously controlled and are triggered by stress. As a result, she can only activate her luck in situations that put her at risk. This makes her an ideal partner for the time-traveling Cable, as he uses her to hinder his enemies’ plans and to rescue his friends from the past. Her most recent appearance saw her reuniting with him in the present. She later infiltrated a secret Weapon X base and found her younger brother, Lazarus, who is a true product of the Perfect Weapon experiments. The Armajesuits, her mother’s cult of quasi-priests, were after him for his mutant emotion-controlling powers, but Domino defeated them and left him with the Chicago priest who raised her as a child.
